mind set !, john naisbitt

Ik was danig onder de indruk van het boek Megatrends van John Naisbitt dat ik eind de jaren ‘80 moest lezen van professor Vandenbroeck. Achteraf beschouwd is het één van de boeken die mijn journalistieke nieuwsgierigheid triggerde.

Sindsdien heb ik van hem niks meer gelezen, tenzij z’n jongste worp Mind Set ! Naisbitt is intussen 78 jaar.

Het boek is opgedeeld in twee delen. In het eerste deel reikt hij elf ‘mindsets’ aan die ons moeten helpen met andere ogen naar de wereld te kijken. In het tweede deel geeft hij vijf ‘pictures of the future’.

1. eleven mindsets : help to adjust and correct our thinking. They our cognitive tools that remove our constraints and help us to get the most of the information we collect.

# 2 The future is embedded in the present.

# 3 Focus on the score of the game.

# 4 Understand how powerful it is not have to be right.

# 5 See the future as a picture puzzle.

Europe can not choose between economic supremacy and social welfare. Europe is likely to become a history theme park.

It’s social welfare is going to make Europe bankrupt.

It considers immigration as a fright, not as a chance.

We are the beneficiaries of the revolutionary breakthroughs of the last years of the twentieth century. The next half of this century will be an era of absorbing, extending and perfecting those great breakthroughs.

vijf tips

 

Je leert op school niet alles. Gelukkig maar. Er zijn tientallen, honderden, … boeken die je een flink stuk op weg helpen, maar dan nog. Je leert van het leven; je leert van te leven.

Ik heb in de loop der jaren een aantal vuistregels samengesteld die me een flink stuk op weg helpen.

1. Hou het zicht vanuit je helicopter.

De dagelijkse operationaliteit vereist vaak een flink stuk van je aandacht, waardoor je makkelijk verstrikt raakt in eerder kleine beslommeringen. Op basis van dergelijke feiten neem je meestal verkeerde beslissingen. Ik vind het belangrijk om zoveel mogelijk vanuit m’n helicopter naar de dingen te kijken. Dat plaatst ze in het juiste perspectief en dat laat je toe beslissingen te nemen in het belang van het bos en niet in het belang van één boom.

2. Elk verhaal heeft minstens twee kanten.

Een verhaal kan je met verstomming slaan en je meteen tot een reactie nopen. Zo’n reacties zijn vaak onnodig emotioneel. Bovendien heeft elk verhaal minstens twee kanten en zolang je niet alle kanten gehoord hebt, kan je de zaken niet objectief beoordelen. Het Grote Gelijk bestaat niet.

3. Laat je niet opjagen.

Beslissingen moeten kordaat en tijdig worden genomen. Maar dat betekent niet dat ze altijd hic et nunc moeten genomen worden. Veel mensen wachten op een beslissing en willen dat die meteen genomen wordt. In het ijle hangen maakt sommige onzeker en dan hebben ze liever een beslissing dan geen beslissing. Soms maakt het zelfs niet uit of de beslissing de goeie is; als er maar een beslissing is. Ik begrijp die onzekerheid maar het is géén reden om meteen te beslissen. Zet voor jezelf het moment waarop de beslissing moet worden genomen en orienteer je daarop.

Overigens, veel problemen lossen zichzelf op.

4. Fouten maken mag.

Ik heb véél respect voor mensen die bereid zijn om in de vuurlinie te gaan. Risico’s nemen moet en dat betekent fouten maken. Beter dat dan dat kiezen voor de status quo uit veiligheidsoverwegingen.

Ik heb er ook al een paar keren flink naast gezeten, maar ik heb er van geleerd en niemand die me iets verwijt.

5. Blijf altijd jezelf.

Er bestaan geen tien varianten van jezelf. Waarom je in bochten wringen om bij deze zus en bij de andere zo te zijn ? Waarom de baas anders aanpakken dan je medewerkers of jezelf.

Ik heb iets met zeep ! Het aantal sterren  van een hotelkamer wordt volgens mij bepaald door de kwaliteit van de zeepjes die je krijgt. De Sunset Marquis in Los Angeles biedt Aveda; de Villa San Michele in Firenze Bulgari. Geef toe, zo’n zeepjes durf je bijna niet te gebruiken maar breng je als souvenir mee naar huis.

Mijn grootmoeder had bij haar dood (ze werd 80 jaar) nog een mooie huid. Haar hele leven gebruikte ze Sunlight. Sindsdien besef ik hoe belangrijk zeep is.

Dat is wellicht waarom ik in extase raak wanneer ik een winkel als Lush voorbijkom. Neem ik de Champagne Sypernova Bath Balistic of de Nutt Massage Bar, de Sex Bomb, Youki-Hi, Think Pink, The Happy Pill, Deep Sleep, The Big Calm, ….

Nu Shelfari op volle toeren begint te draaien, biedt ook Amazon een virtuele boekenplank aan. Ik koop al een tijdje geen boeken meer in de boekhandel. Als student ging ik graag naar de Fnac, maar de beleving is er helemaal weg. ‘t Is enkel nog drummen aan de kassa’s.

Die beleving bieden Shelfari en Amazon wel. Shelfari is écht een virtuele boekenplank en stimuleert je om contact te zoeken met gelijkgestemde zielen. Zo krijg je een overzicht van diegenen die dezelfde boeken hebben als jij. Aankopen bij Shelfari viab Amazon kan, maar is bijzaak. Amazon Profile biedt je vooral veel tips. Als je dit en dat boek leest, zal je wellicht ook dit en dat graag in je collectie willen. Overigens met een handige wishlist.

Brussel heeft er een nieuwe ‘conceptstore’ bij. Vlakbij het Woluwe Shopping Centrum opende Cook and Book, een enorm complex waar zowel boeken worden verkocht (en meer dan alleen maar kookboeken) als gegeten wordt in één van de vijf restaurants of bars. Het is bovendien zeven dagen op zeven open van 8 tot 22.00 uur; op donderdag vrijdag en zaterdag zelfs tot middernacht. Jammer dat de website nikszeggend is.

Sommige ideeën zijn poepsimpel en toch sterk. In de Koninginnegalerij in Brussel opende zopas Rosy Rosa. Alles wat met rozen te maken heeft wordt er verkocht : siroop, papier, parfum, drank, … en uiteraard bloemen.

Het heeft een paar maanden geduurd vooraleer ik me door The World is Flat heb kunnen worstelen. Release 2.0 telt net 600 pagina’s. Zojuist kwam release 3.0 uit op paperback. Thomas Friedman is columnist bij The New York Times. Z’n columns ken je misschien via De Morgen. Eerder won hij  The Pulitzer Prize met z’n boek The Lexus and the Olive Tree.

- Work flow software platforms that enable you to create virtual global offices, not limited either by the boundaries of your office or your country, and to access talent sitting in different parts of the world and have them complete tasks that you need completed in real time.

4 # Uploading : harnessing the power of communities.

- Community developed software : the open source software.

- Community developed answers.

- Blogging : uploading news and commentary.

- Wikipedia : community-uploaded content.

5 # Outsourcing : Y2K & India.

Due to Y2K America and India started dating. It demonstrated to so many different businesses that the combination of the PC, the internet and fiber-optic cable had created the possibility of a whole new form of collaboration and horizontal value creation : outsourcing. Any service, call center, business support operation, or knowledge work that could be digitized could be sourced globally to the cheapest, smartest, most efficient provider. Using fiber-optic-cable-connected workstations, Indian techies could get under the hood of your company’s computer and do all the adjustments, even though they were located halfway around the world.

6 # Offshoring to China.

On December 11 2001 China formally joined the World Trade Organization, which meant Beijing agreed to follow the same global rules governing imports, exports, and foreign investments that most countries in the world were following. One of the biggest countries in the world is eager to learn …

7 # Supply-chaining.

If you lift a product from the shelves from Wall Mart and the cashier scans it, a signal will be generated. That signal will go out across the Wall Mart network to the supplier of that product – whether that supplier’s factory is in coastal China or coastal Maine. That signal will pop up on the supplier’s computer screen and prompt him to make another of that item and ship it via the Wal-Mart suplly chain and the whole cycle will start anew.

8 # Insourcing.

UPS is your laptop repairer. If you own a Toshiba laptop computer that is under warranty and it breaks and you call Toshiba to have it repaired, Toshiba will tell you to drop it off at u UPS store and have it shipped to Toshiba, and it will get repaired and then be shipped back to you. But here’s what they don’t tell you : UPS doesn’t just pick up and deliver your Toshiba laptop. UPS actually repairs the computer in its own UPS-run workshop dedicated to computer and printer repairs at its Louisville hub.

9 # In-forming : Google, Yahoo!, MSN Web Search.

In-forming is the individual’s personal analog to uploading, outsourcing, insourcing, supply-chaining, and offshoring. In-forming is the ability to build and develop your own personal supply-chain – a supply chain of information, knowledge, and entertainment.  In-forming is about self-collaboration – becoming your own self-directed and self-empowered researcher, editor, and selector of entertainment, without having to go to the library or the movie-theater or through network television.

10 # The Steroids : digital, mobile, personal and virtual.

- Digitzation.

- Instant messaging and file sharing.

- VOIP : making phone calls over the internet.

- Videoconferencing.

- Computer graphics.

- New wireless technologies and devices.

The Triple Convergence :

• CONVERGENCE I: Up until the year 2000 the ten flatteners were semi-independent from one another. However around the year 2000, all of the flatteners converged with one another. This convergence could be compared to complementary goods, in that each flattener enhanced all of the other flatteners; the more one flattener developed, the more the global playing field was leveled.

• CONVERGENCE II: After the emergence of the ten flatteners, a new platform had to be built in order to do business. Businesses had to begin collaborating horizontally as opposed to vertically (top down method of collaboration where innovation comes from the top). Horizontalization meant that companies and people had to start collaborating with other departments or companies in order to add value creation or innovation. However, the convergence occurred when horizontalization and the ten flatteners began to reinforce each other. In other words when people began to reorient themselves and their businesses to new technologies the world flattened a little more.

• CONVERGENCE III: After the fall of the Berlin Wall, countries such as: China, India, Russia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Central Asia that followed a Soviet economic plan began to open up their economies to the world. When these new players converged with the rest of the global playing field, they added new brain power to that field. Therefore, the convergence enhanced horizontal collaboration across the globe. In turn, this convergence was the most important force in shaping politics and economics in the early twenty-first century.

reintroducing first class

Jetairways biedt vanaf 6 augustus rechtstreeks vluchten vanop Zaventem naar New York (Newark) voor de luttele prijs van 124 euro per traject. Taksen inbegrepen kost de hele rit heen en terug niet meer dan 407 euro. Geen enkele andere luchtvaartmaatschappij doet het hen na.

Maar de goedkoopste maatschappij biedt ook de duurste tickets aan. Wie daar zin in heeft kan first class boeken.

damien hirst versus the rest

Men kan me moeilijk een cultuurbarbaar noemen. Ik lees (graag en veel), stap wel eens een museum binnen en haat strandvakanties. De eerste vrije dag van de vakantie ging dan ook naar het nieuwe museum Wiels in de voormalige brouwerijen van Wielemans Ceuppens in Vorst. Het industriële pand lag er jaren te verkommeren tot men besloot er het zoveelste Brusselse kunstencentrum van te maken. Een nobel doel, maar een fout beleid. Een pand redt men niet door er een museum of een cultureel centrum in te maken. Of er is nood aan extra museumruimte (bij voorkeur meer centraal in de stad) of je geeft het gebouw een écht functionele bestemming. Geen nepbestemming.

Met spijt in het hart moest ik vaststellen dat de lopende tentoonstelling (een tiental stukken !) Expats / Clandestines één van de vele was. Het gebouw heb ik nu wel gezien; terugkeren doe ik niet meteen.

Zoveel van de moderne (beslist !) kunst (?) heeft niks te betekenen. Wie maakt nog echt een statement ? Moet ik onder de indruk zijn van een filmpje waarin een kerel een ijsblokje voortrapt tot het helemaal gesmolten is ? Geef mij dan maar de Diamond Skull van Damien Hirst. Dat is pas kunst en daar ben ik wel onderste boven van.
